For the last 14 years , we’ve tried to create something seriously unique with the Vox Popular Media Arts Festival. We’ve explored different disciplines, inviting artists of all backgrounds to contribute to the festival. And we continuously try to push the boundaries of what media and film can be, by showcasing the most cutting-edge techniques out there to the general public.

As a result, the festival is something we’re truly proud of, and can’t wait for September to show you all. But in the meantime, we have some news.

According to Flightnetwork , North America’s leading travel agency, Vox Popular Media Arts Festival was just placed among the Top 20 Film Festivals in North America ! We’re named alongside festivals that have long inspired us, and partners in the industry that we’re proud to share space with.

Here’s what they had to say about us:

The Vox Popular Media Arts Festival allows the voice of the people from around the world to be heard in a local environment.

The Festival (formerly the Bay Street Film Festival) will celebrate its 14th anniversary from September 13-16, 2018. Vox Popular programs include all genres of media arts – documentary, features, shorts, experimental, 360VR, and installations made in Northwestern Ontario , Canada and internationally.

The annual festival and year-round programming connects professional independent filmmakers with other artists and to audiences of all ages and interests by showing films, facilitating creative and professional development and multidisciplinary arts performances in an accessible, inclusive, friendly environment.

That’s it, folks. And to note: festival passes are going fast for $30 CAD. We can’t wait for September, and especially to welcoming any new Flightnetwork readers that may come. See you then!

Join us for the 3rd annual showing of the film ‘Tampopo’ sponsored by Rose N Crantz Roasting Co.! (that’s right, we’re going to show this film every year until all of tbay has seen it). Seeing it once is not enough – it’s one of those films you need to bring your friends to, and your friends’ friends.

Officially, Rotten Tomatoes calls the film “… an off-beat, critically-acclaimed episodic Japanese comedy all about food. Director Juzo Itami has created an inventive comedy that draws equally on satire, screwball comedy, and witty verbal jokes.”

IMPORTANT: This year we’re upping the anti. Now that you’ve seen a couple times, we’re inviting you to come dressed as your favourite Tampopo character! Do it with style and respect, but do it! A prize will be awarded for the best character.

There will also be raffle tickets for incredible gift cards from generous local restaurants and food establishments.

Tickets are $15 in advance and includes a bowl of homemade ramen (veggie broth available) with all the toppings or $20 at the door. They’re available through Roots to Harvest (450 Fort William Rd), or at Both Hands Pizzeria (297 Park Ave, main floor).

ALSO IMPORTANT: BYOBowl! We’ll have extras, but it’s waaaaay better if you bring your own.

Last year this event sold out, we ran out of food and we have to bring chairs from all directions. This year plan ahead – buy our tickets in advance and we’ve got some Tampopo 3.0 improvements up our sleaves to make sure we’ve got food for y’all and shorter line ups!

Presenting adventurous and fiercely determined women, with a thirst for novelty and a desire to experience life differently. Meet this Franco-Ontarian trio Les Chiclettes: comprised of Nathalie Nadon, Julie Kim Beaudry and Geneviève Cholette. They are proposing a second album in career titled “Voyage à Trois” (Trip for Three).

Les Chiclette’s trademarked vocal harmonies evoke those of The Andrews Sisters from the 1940s. Their original material speaks of the archetypal macho men in all their guises but seen through the eyes of the audacious, and bold women that they are—the very women who define themselves through their men, in spite of being totally enamored and in love with them. « Will you take the risk, even if you risk losing it all? I am one who dares, one who takes position and forgoes all formalities», adapted from “La Grève au Trop Parfait”, (On strike against perfection) an original title on the album that provides a well-argued rebuttal to society’s standards for women.
Comfortable in their own skins, the three women seduce instantly; their stories are smart, enticing and feminine, and they certainly won’t leave anyone indifferent. «Nothing is more seductive to a man, than a woman who is proud of herself» shares the fiery Nathalie Nadon. This illustrates perfectly Les Chiclettes of today: three independent artists who aspire to live their art and take control of their destiny.

Spirited, fearless, at times visionaries and sometimes unpredictable, Les Chiclettes are not afraid to show who and what they are in their stage performance.

The energy, vitality and beauty of the melodies and exceptional vocal harmonies, make “Voyage à Trois” an absolutely delightful album.
